Dear New Music Fans,

It is with great enthusiasm that I take over the Artistic Directorship of NUMUS, an organization that I have long admired for its creative vision and cutting-edge programming. I will do my utmost to build on the laudable track record that NUMUS has developed over the past 20  years in presenting the very best in new and exploratory musics.

In an effort to introduce myself to the Waterloo new music community, the season kicks off with a duo performance between me and acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and improviser Joe McPhee. Improvisation is also central to a three-day mini-festival titled Structured Improvisations / Improvising Structures that will take place in January. This special event will feature legendary composer / improviser Pauline Oliveros in two ensemble contexts as well as a unique collaboration between celebrated Waterloo composer Peter Hatch and the Blue Rider Ensemble, one of the country’s pre-eminent new music groups.

Building on the tremendous success of last year’s concerts at the Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, we will also present two concerts of chamber music there this season: Russian Canons and Weather-Beaten. The latter concert will include the premiere of a new work by acclaimed local composer Jascha Narveson, as well as a set by Jesse Somfay, an emerging Waterloo-area turntablist/DJ. In association with the Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound, we will also be presenting American composer Morton Feldman’s rarely performed large-scale work For Phillip Guston.

All in all, the 2006–2007 numus season promises to expand on traditional conceptions of “new” and “experimental” music, while remaining steadfastly committed to fostering a contemporary local Canadian music identity. I sincerely hope you’ll join us this season.

Jesse Stewart
Artistic Director
